U-S-A U-S-A U-S-A! Oh wait… G-U-A G-U-A G-U-A!! Ok I don’t think yelling G-U-A is actually a thing here, but September 14th was indepence day in Guatemala and the celebrations build up and then last for maybe two weeks in some cases! I’ve had the privilege to experience our own “Feria Chapina” put on by students and parents at school, the Xelafer (the annual fair in Xela), and many other activities that are going on around town. On Saturday I was riding through town and saw a giant (seemingly city-wide) water fight! Busses driving by each other while their passengers throw as much water as they can at each other from the windows. People loaded down in the backs of trucks with tarps for defense and buckets of water for ammo. No one in or near the streets are safe from the water war! People have been running around with Guatemala flags, buildings and cars are decorated, and fireworks have been exploding all week! It has been a very exciting week! The Feria Chapina at school was a great event! The students did a very good job organizing it! Unfortunately, I will be joining a group of other teachers this week to get a pie in the face. This is because I signed up as a fundraiser and whichever teachers got enough tickets through the day all get a pie in the face from a student! It’s all good though.. I did sign up after all, but also all the money goes to a good cause! All the funds raised at this event go to pay for various student activities and trips throughout the year. I’m looking forward to an extra day to sleep in tomorrow as we enjoy an extra day off for Independence Day!
