I’m in Guatemala!!! Wow! This summer has been absolutely hectic… In the best way possible! I’ve worked a few summer camps, drove to Washington State to be in a wedding, hiked my highest peak — 13,065ft, spent time with family & friends, and essentially filled in every open minute with all the summer things! I landed in Guatemala city close to midnight CST on July 28. The original itinerary fell apart right out the gate when I sat in the Roanoke airport for two hours for engine maintenance. By all means, please make sure the engines are working before takeoff!! Unfortunately, this meant missing my connection flight and adopting a new flight plan where I picked up more hours on layover and an extra stop in Houston. My ride in Guatemala city had to make the return trip to Xela so upon landing in Xela I hopped an Uber and stayed the night in a hotel which the school reserved for me. The following morning I got another Uber and made my way to the Alamo bus station where I purchased a ticket for the 4 hour ride to Quetzaltenango (Xela). I arrived safely to the city which I will call home for at least the next year around 4:30CST on July 29. A lady on the bus noticed that I looked a bit lost and kindly lent me her phone to let my ride know they could pick me up from the bus station. I was driven to my apartment, greeted with a few groceries to get me started, and given a brief walking tour of the city. The past few days have been full of IAS (InterAmerican School) orientation in the mornings and my own exploration of the city in the evenings! Overall, the first few days have been incredible!
